Lauren holds a GIA Pearl Certification from the Gemological Institute of America — the globally recognised authority in gemological education and standards. Her hands-on role at The Pearl Source spans pearl procurement, quality control, and customer education.
Pearl quality is assessed across five core value factors: luster, nacre thickness, surface quality, shape, and size. Of these, luster is typically evaluated first — it determines how light reflects off and through the pearl’s surface, and is the single most reliable indicator of overall quality. A pearl with exceptional luster can command significant value even where other factors are moderate. Nacre thickness underpins luster over time; thin nacre degrades, while thick nacre ensures a pearl remains beautiful for decades. Surface quality and shape are assessed alongside nacre, with round pearls and clean surfaces commanding a premium — though certain baroque shapes are valued for their individuality. Size is evaluated last, as it amplifies the impact of the other four factors rather than standing alone as a quality indicator.
