Pearl Tooth Test: Does It Really Work?
The pearl tooth test can sometimes distinguish a nacreous pearl from an imitation with a very smooth coating, but it is not proof that a pearl is natural, cultured, untreated, valuable—or even genuine in every case. Some imitations can have a gritty surface, and rubbing jewelry against teeth can damage the pearl or its setting.
Treat the tooth test as a rough clue, not a certificate of authenticity. Start with non-destructive visual inspection and seller documentation. If identity, origin or treatment materially affects the purchase or value, use an independent gemological laboratory.

Look for depth and sharpness in the reflection rather than a flat, painted or glassy shine—one of the same quality factors that matters for grading pearls generally. Under magnification, genuine nacre may show fine surface structure and natural characteristics. However, high-quality imitations can look convincing, while genuine pearls can be smooth and well matched. Appearance is a clue, not a verdict.
On drilled pearls, examine the hole under magnification. Chipped or peeling coating that exposes a different-colored bead can indicate an imitation. Genuine pearls may show visible nacre layers, but worn, poorly drilled or repaired genuine pearls can also have rough edges. Don’t insert tools into the hole or scrape the surface.
A strand may show small natural variations in shape, color, surface or luster. Exact-looking uniformity can be suspicious, but it isn’t proof of imitation: high-quality cultured pearls can be matched very carefully, and imitation manufacturers can intentionally add irregularities. Judge the complete pattern rather than looking for a mandatory flaw in every pearl.
Plastic imitations may feel light, and some genuine pearls initially feel cool before warming in the hand. But glass imitations can be heavy and cool as well. Weight and temperature should be treated only as supporting observations, never stand-alone tests.
Confirm whether the seller describes the item as natural, cultured or imitation, and whether treatments are disclosed.
